The welfare of the patient is at the heart of both health and medical careers. The similarity is that that both types of care givers want the same thing which is to provide care for patients.

There are a few possible careers that you may get into:

1. People are advised to visit the dentist at least once a year or every six months. To keep your teeth clean you cannot rely on brushing and flossing alone. It takes 8 years of study to complete a degree in Dentistry. To become a medical doctor takes approximately 8 years also. The advice received from current analysts is that the demand for these professionals will grow continuously as a large number of these “baby boomer” practicians are expected to retire soon.

Dentists diagnose, prevent and treat problems in the teeth and mouth tissue. They perform x-rays, extract or repair fractured teeth and put in protective plastic sealants. The orthodontist is the specialist required when and If patients need to straighten their teeth, have bands put on or a plate made.

The variety of equipment Dentists use to get the job done include x-ray machines, drills and scalpels, probes, mouth mirrors, forceps, and brushes. In order to protect both themselves and their patients their equipment must always be sterilised, they also wear protective glasses, masks and gloves which are disposable

2. Surgeons really work on the front line of medicine. This is very challenging work as it is both complicated and strenuous. It is not unusual for doctors to work more than 60 hours a week in the theatre. However aside from general surgery, there are many specialists who work within a given frame work of disease or medical expertise.

Some examples of these include the treatment of the skeletal system which is known as orthopaedic surgery; the treatment of the brain known as neurological, ophthalmology which is treatment of the eyes, otolaryngology which is the branch medicine concerned with the treatment and diagnosis of diseases of the ear, nose, and throat as well as plastic or reconstructive surgery for those patients recovering from burn injuries or who simply want to change some part of their physical appearance.

3. You may choose to study to become a respiratory therapist. This person is responsible for the evaluation, treatment, and care of patients who are suffering from cardiopulmonary disorders; people who are suffering from an illness as it relates to the heart and lungs.

Under the direct supervision of the physician respiratory therapists carry out relevant tests to evaluate a patient. Tests are carried out and then from the analyses which enables proper treatment decisions.

Respiratory therapists treat a range of people - from older people to premature infants who not yet fully developed their lungs. Respiratory therapists may also be called in to help asthmatics, drowning and heart attack victims, plus those suffering from shock or a stroke.

4. Social workers are a part of the front line in the health and medical field. Under their portfolio they seek to help people who are suffering serious illnesses, have a disability, or who are addicted to some type of substance abuse. Families can be aided by social workers if for example they live in sub standard housing, are in serious domestic conflicts, or are afflicted with child or spousal abuse.

If it is your sincere desire to help people then go ahead and study for a career in health and medicine. To achieve your goals you need to train for your qualifications.
