Medical Field Training
School starts for most people at the age of 4 or 5. We graduate at 17/18 years of age from secondary school. On this basis, we have already spent a large number of our formative years studying. But for those who wish to study medicine and to become a doctor; they will have to continue studying for a) another 4 years as an undergraduate, b) 4 years at medical school, and c) a further 3 to 7 years as an intern and resident; but d) if they wish to specialise in a specific field then a couple of more years of study are required. This means that a lot of work, study and patience is required before you are finally established as a doctor – maybe after you have reached the age of 30!
Maybe you don’t want to be in the student arena for such a long period so what are your options whereby you could still work in the medical field to make a career? Aside from studying to be a doctor, there plenty of work options still within the medical field. To give you an idea, here are some of them.
Nurses are always in demand whether in the US or elsewhere. This is because a number of nurses are of “baby boomer” age and are nearing retirement in an age where today’s youth are no longer excited about training and this is why many nurses are being hired from other countries; in Australia there is appears to be a high percentage of nurses coming from Africa.
In Australia nurses attend university where they learn such subjects such as anatomy, biology, chemistry, infection control, medical terminology, physiology and several others before undergoing onto hospital wards to enjoy hands on training. There are exams to pass which test their knowledge so that hopefully there won’t be any problems when it is time to do the real thing. However while this is the way nurses achieve accreditation now I have heard the older more experienced nurses say that the old way is best and that learning on the job is better all round. I guess in the interests of efficiency and the dollar the “newer “method is considered the way to go..
Obviously different jobs require different training and training periods. For pharmacists, lab technicians and nurses, the study period is less than the 8 years or more required by Doctors. For a nurse the qualifying period is usually around three to four years.
Pharmacists dispense drugs at the store. They have the knowledge to recommend a drug similar to that prescribed if for some reason it is unobtainable or indeed beyond your budget. Sometimes they provide advice to doctors in order to determine the proper patient dosage as they are aware of patient side effects.
Lab technician positions are for individuals who depending on their training are the people who test samples or man the X-ray or mammogram machines when required.
With a little medical training you could be successful working outside of a hospital environment. You could train to qualify as medical transcribers where your job is to transcribe what the doctor has said using a tape recorder. You carry out the work at home and then return the document/s to the doctor.
Pharmaceutical companies need sales agents to sell their drugs to doctors and hospitals. Obviously training into the specific uses and effects of the individual drug ingredients needs to be studied carefully in order to be an effective representative of the company.
In short it can be seen that anyone can make a career once he or she has made a decision about which path they want to study and have undergone the required medical training. If you are unable to study full time there is always the option of looking for a school which offers part time or online tuition.
Just remember that once you have earned your degree your career has started and you are on your to a long and fulfilling lifetime of work in a field of your choosing.

Nursing is actually a least appreciated job, eventhough the salary is pretty decent. Nurses are always under pressure, as they are responsible for many things and hence they need to be at their toes throughout their career..
